Heart Shaped Xbox
As lore dictates, in 1991, Nirvana's Nevermind changed popular music in the same way that Elvis Presley or the Beatles did. While I believe this to be largely true, it may have had a heavier impact on me as it happened to drop right as a young El Tiburon was just becoming aware of music. I like to think i had decent taste in music up until that point, (Metallica, Beastie Boys, etc) but Nevermind was something different, and according to album sales, I wasn't alone. Nirvana became this gigantic rock juggernaut that dominated the billboard as well as the tabloids. This was compounded by Cobain's suicide, only adding to the folklore that surrounded the band and cemented them as rock legends. I scavenged for all the acoustic bootlegs and documentaries i could find. Nevermind was my first guitar tab book and essentially taught me the basics of guitar. I read every article and review of anything that had to do with Nirvana, well after they disbanded. After a while, like most grieving fans, I moved on.
The new Guitar Hero commercial features Nirvana's Breed. It's been a long time since I heard that song and it prompted me to dig up my copy of Nevermind. Do yourself a favor and find/buy/download this album. Throw it in the CD player on your way to work. Forget Kurt's suicide, Courtney Love, the Foo Fighters and everything that's attached to the Legend of Nirvana. Just listen to the songs on that album. Play it loud. Goddamn, it is a good fucking record.
